June 1989.

It’s the bicentenary of the French Revolution. My school puts on a show about the year 1789. The roles are cast, and I’m chosen to play Marie-Antoinette. The boy chosen to play Louis XVI is named Samuel Lévy.

On the day of the show, my mother and Samuel’s father are talking. Lélia comments ironically on the choice of actors to portray the crowned heads destined for decapitation. Again the word Jew hits my ear with the shocking coldness of the guillotine. I experience a strange, uncomfortable mixture of emotions: pride at being different, tinged with the threat of death.
